Introduction
Vinyl siding is sold by the square. One square equals 100 square feet of finished wall. A 1,800 square foot ranch with a gable and two dozen openings might need 22 squares after waste. Get that number wrong and you either run short on the back wall or end up with three unopened boxes in the garage.
The math isn’t hard, but it has a few traps. Gable ends are triangles, not rectangles, so they use half the base-height product. Doors and windows don’t need siding, so their area subtracts from the total. Waste covers offcuts at corners, J-channel returns, and the occasional bad cut. Ten percent is the standard allowance for vinyl.
How to Use the Vinyl Siding Calculator
Select your currency from the dropdown if your supplier doesn’t quote in US dollars.
Enter the total wall length around the house. For a rectangular footprint, add all four sides together.
Enter the wall height, measured from the foundation line to the top plate.
Enter the number of gable ends. A simple gable roof has two.
Enter the gable height, the vertical distance from the eave line to the ridge.
Enter total door area in square feet, square meters, or square inches.
Enter total window area in the same units.
Set the siding exposure. This value is recorded in the breakdown for reference.
Enter the waste factor. Ten percent is standard for a straight-sided house.
Enter the price per square, per square foot, or per square meter. Pick the unit your supplier uses.
Add trim cost and any labor you’re paying for. Labor can be a flat total, per square, or per square foot.
Hit Calculate. The Summary tab shows the headline numbers. The Detailed Breakdown tab shows every conversion.
How the Vinyl Siding Calculator Formula Works
Every dimension converts to feet, and every area converts to square feet.
Formula: Gross Wall Area (ft²) = Wall Length (ft) × Wall Height (ft)
Formula: Average Wall Width (ft) = Wall Length ÷ 4
Formula: Gable Area (ft²) = Number of Gables × (0.5 × Average Wall Width × Gable Height)
Formula: Net Siding Area (ft²) = Gross Wall Area + Gable Area − Door Area − Window Area
Formula: Area with Waste (ft²) = Net Siding Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
Formula: Squares Needed = Area with Waste ÷ 100
Formula: Siding Cost = Area with Waste × Cost per ft²
Formula: Total Cost = Siding Cost + Trim Cost + Labor Cost
The gross wall area uses a simple perimeter-times-height shortcut. If your house has more than four walls or a complicated footprint, add each straight section’s length to the wall length field, or run the calculation one section at a time.
The gable math assumes an even split across four walls. The tool divides the total wall length by four to estimate an average wall width, then applies the triangle formula (half of base times height) for each gable. On a house where the gable ends are wider or narrower than average, the estimate will be off by a few percent. For an exact gable count, run the front and back gables separately.
Waste applies to the net area before the squares conversion. Ten percent is the residential default. Fifteen percent makes sense on houses with lots of corners, dormers, or angled walls. Twenty percent is for steep gables and complex rooflines.
The price unit conversion is the time-saver. Per square divides by 100 to get per square foot. Per square meter divides by 10.7639. Per square foot is 1:1. Whatever unit your supplier quotes, the tool uses the same cost-per-square-foot value to multiply by total area.
Worked Example
You’re siding a 1,650 square foot ranch with a simple gable roof. The perimeter of the house is 182 feet. Wall height is 9 feet. Two gable ends, each 5.5 feet tall at the peak. Total door area is 72 square feet. Total window area is 156 square feet. Waste is 10%. Your supplier charges $215 per square for the siding, and trim runs $185. You’re doing the install yourself, so labor is zero.
Step 1: Gross wall area.
182 × 9 = 1,638 ft².
Step 2: Average wall width.
182 ÷ 4 = 45.5 ft.
Step 3: Gable area.
2 × (0.5 × 45.5 × 5.5) = 2 × 125.125 = 250.25 ft².
Step 4: Total openings.
72 + 156 = 228 ft².
Step 5: Net siding area.
1,638 + 250.25 − 228 = 1,660.25 ft².
In square meters: 1,660.25 × 0.092903 = 154.26 m².
Step 6: Apply 10% waste.
1,660.25 × 1.10 = 1,826.28 ft².
In square meters: 169.67 m².
Step 7: Squares needed.
1,826.28 ÷ 100 = 18.26 squares.
Step 8: Cost per square foot.
$215 ÷ 100 = $2.15.
Step 9: Siding cost.
1,826.28 × $2.15 = $3,926.50.
Step 10: Total cost.
$3,926.50 + $185.00 + $0 = $4,111.50.
The Summary tab reads: 1,638 ft² gross, 228 ft² openings, 250.25 ft² gable, 1,660.25 ft² net (154.26 m²), 1,826.28 ft² with waste, 18.26 squares, $3,926.50 siding cost, $185.00 trim, $0.00 labor, $4,111.50 total. The breakdown tab lists every conversion.
Switch the waste factor to 15% and the order climbs to 19.09 squares. Same house, one extra box of siding on the list.
