How the Gravel Calculator Formula Works
The calculator determines the volume of gravel needed based on the area dimensions and depth. The volume is then converted to weight using the gravel density and to cost using the price per cubic yard.
Formula: Volume = Length × Width × Depth
All dimensions are converted to feet before calculation. The volume is computed in cubic feet.
Formula: Volume (cubic yards) = Volume (cubic feet) / 27
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard — the standard unit for purchasing gravel.
Formula: Weight = Volume × Density
Weight is calculated in pounds using the density in pounds per cubic foot. The density varies by gravel type — crushed stone is typically about 100 lbs/ft³, while sand is about 90 lbs/ft³.
Formula: Weight (tons) = Weight (pounds) / 2000
One ton equals 2,000 pounds.
Formula: Total Cost = Volume (yd³) × (1 + Waste Factor) × Price per Cubic Yard + Delivery Cost
The waste factor accounts for compaction, settling, spillage, and other losses. A 10% waste factor is typical for most projects.
Worked Example: Gravel for a Driveway
Consider a driveway measuring 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, with a desired gravel depth of 3 inches. The homeowner is using crushed stone with a density of 100 lbs/ft³, costing $45 per cubic yard, with a 10% waste factor and $50 delivery.
Step 1: Convert depth to feet
3 inches = 3/12 = 0.25 feet
Step 2: Calculate volume
Area = 20 × 10 = 200 ft²
Volume = 200 × 0.25 = 50 ft³
Volume (yd³) = 50 / 27 = 1.85 yd³
Step 3: Calculate weight
Weight = 50 × 100 = 5,000 lbs = 2.50 tons
Step 4: Apply waste factor and cost
Volume with waste = 1.85 × 1.10 = 2.04 yd³
Gravel cost = 2.04 × $45.00 = $91.80
Total cost = $91.80 + $50.00 = $141.80
Interpretation: A 20×10 foot driveway with 3 inches of gravel needs about 2.04 cubic yards of gravel, weighing 2.5 tons. The total cost, including delivery, is approximately $142. This estimate helps the homeowner plan their budget and order the right amount of material.
