How the Glass Weight Calculator Formula Works
The calculator computes the weight of glass based on its volume and density. The volume is calculated from the panel dimensions, and the weight is the volume times the density. The formulas follow standard physics principles for calculating the mass of a solid object.
Formula: Area = Length × Width
The surface area of the glass panel in square centimeters (cm²). All dimensions are converted to centimeters before calculation.
Formula: Volume = Area × Thickness
The volume in cubic centimeters (cm³). One cubic centimeter is equivalent to one milliliter.
Formula: Weight = Volume × Density
The weight in grams, where density is in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³). The weight is then converted to kilograms and pounds for convenience.
Formula: Total Weight = Weight per Panel × Quantity
For multiple panels, the total weight is the weight per panel multiplied by the number of panels. A waste factor is applied to account for breakage, defects, and cutoffs.
Formula: Total Cost = Total Weight with Waste × Price per kg + Handling Cost
The cost is calculated based on the total weight with waste and the price per kilogram, plus any handling or delivery fees. All unit conversions are handled automatically.
Worked Example: Glass Tabletop
Consider a glass tabletop measuring 48 inches long, 36 inches wide, and 0.25 inches thick. The glass is standard float glass with a density of 2.50 g/cm³. The customer needs 1 panel and wants to know the weight and cost.
Step 1: Convert dimensions to centimeters
Length: 48 in × 2.54 = 121.92 cm
Width: 36 in × 2.54 = 91.44 cm
Thickness: 0.25 in × 2.54 = 0.635 cm
Step 2: Calculate the area
Area = 121.92 × 91.44 = 11,148.36 cm²
Step 3: Calculate the volume
Volume = 11,148.36 × 0.635 = 7,079.21 cm³
Step 4: Calculate the weight
Weight = 7,079.21 × 2.50 = 17,698.03 g = 17.70 kg = 39.02 lbs
Step 5: Apply waste factor and cost
Weight with waste (5%): 17.70 × 1.05 = 18.59 kg
Cost: 18.59 kg × $2.50/kg = $46.47
Interpretation: A 48×36 inch glass tabletop weighs approximately 17.7 kg (39 lbs). With a 5% waste factor and $2.50/kg pricing, the estimated cost is about $46.47 plus handling fees. This weight is significant — you’ll need adequate support and careful handling during installation.
