How the Drywall Formula Works
Drywall estimation follows a straightforward area-based calculation, accounting for openings and material waste:
Total Wall Area = Perimeter × Ceiling Height
Net Area = Total Wall Area – Door Area – Window Area
Sheets Needed = Ceil(Net Area / Sheet Area)
The calculator subtracts door and window openings because those areas don’t need drywall. The sheet area depends on the dimensions you specify — a standard 4×8 sheet covers 32 square feet, while 4×12 sheets cover 48 square feet.
With Waste Factor: Sheets with Waste = Ceil(Sheets Needed × (1 + Waste Percentage / 100))
Joint Compound: approximately 1 gallon per 150 square feet of wall area (for three coats)
Drywall Tape: 1 roll (500 feet) covers approximately 500 square feet
Screws: approximately 1.25 pounds per 100 square feet
Worked Example
A homeowner is finishing a basement room that measures 14 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 8 feet tall. The room has one door (20 sq ft) and two windows (15 sq ft total). They plan to use 4×8 drywall sheets at $12 each, with a 10% waste factor.
Step 1: Calculate perimeter — 2 × (14 + 12) = 52 feet.
Step 2: Calculate total wall area — 52 × 8 = 416 square feet.
Step 3: Subtract openings — 416 – 20 – 15 = 381 square feet net.
Step 4: Calculate sheet area — 4 × 8 = 32 square feet per sheet.
