Ordering carpet by the square yard gets expensive fast when your estimate is off. This square yard calculator converts any floor plan, garden bed, or slab into the units your supplier actually sells in. Pick a shape (rectangle, circle, triangle, trapezoid, L-shape, or a direct area number), enter the dimensions, and it returns area in yd², ft², m², in², and acres. Choose a material and the tool adds volume and weight, since concrete, topsoil, and gravel sell by the cubic yard or the ton, not the square yard. Waste factor defaults to 10%, which handles most cuts and offcuts. Contractors use it for takeoffs; homeowners use it to double-check quotes before signing.
How to Use the Square Yard Calculator
Choose your unit system. Imperial uses feet and yards. Metric uses meters and still reports square yards for supplier matching.
Pick a shape. Rectangle, L-shape, circle, triangle, trapezoid, or direct area entry if you already know the number.
Enter the dimensions for your shape. Add how many identical areas you have if you’re doing multiple rooms or garden beds.
Choose a material. Carpet, sod, concrete, topsoil, mulch, gravel, sand, paver base, or custom.
Set the depth. Defaults load per material, so concrete starts at 4 inches and mulch at 3.
Adjust the waste factor. 10% covers most cuts. Bump it to 15% for diagonal layouts.
Optional: set the density. Only matters for bulk materials when you’re pricing by weight.
Enter unit costs and read the summary. Material, labor, and additional cost lines add up to a total.
How the Square Yard Calculator Formula Works
One square yard is 9 square feet. That’s the pivot point. The tool converts every input to square meters first, then converts again to display in yd², ft², m², in², and acres. This keeps the math consistent no matter which unit you start in.
Formula: Square Yards = Square Feet ÷ 9
Formula: Rectangle Area = Length × Width
Formula: L-Shape Area = (Overall L × Overall W) − (Cutout L × Cutout W)
Formula: Circle Area = π × r² (r = radius, diameter ÷ 2, or circumference ÷ 2π)
Formula: Triangle Area = 0.5 × Base × Height
Formula: Trapezoid Area = 0.5 × (Side A + Side B) × Height
Formula: Area with Waste = Total Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
Formula: Volume = Area with Waste × Depth
Formula: Weight = Volume × Density
Depth converts to meters internally, then back out to feet and yards. If you enter 4 inches, that’s 0.1016 meters, or 0.333 feet, or 0.111 yards. Density is stored as kg/m³ internally and displayed as lb/ft³ in imperial mode.
Cost math runs on square yards, not square feet, because most material suppliers quote that way. Carpet, for example, comes in 12-foot wide rolls priced per square yard. Concrete sells by the cubic yard. Bulk materials like gravel and topsoil sell by the ton or tonne. The calculator lets you use both cost lines at once, so a job with bulk material and a per-area install can be priced in one pass.
Worked Example
A living room that’s 14 feet 6 inches by 11 feet 3 inches, plus a hallway that’s 9 by 4 feet. Both areas go through the calculator together. Carpet at $4.25 per square yard, 10% waste, $350 labor.
Living room: 14.5 × 11.25 = 163.13 ft².
Hallway: 9 × 4 = 36 ft².
Total: 163.13 + 36 = 199.13 ft². Add as two identical areas of different sizes, or enter the sum directly in direct area mode.
Square yards: 199.13 ÷ 9 = 22.13 yd².
With 10% waste: 22.13 × 1.10 = 24.34 yd².
Material cost: 24.34 × $4.25 = $103.44.
Labor: $350.
Total: $453.44.
Cost per square foot: 453.44 ÷ 199.13 = $2.28.
Interpretation: You need 25 square yards of carpet to be safe. Most carpet suppliers sell by the square yard and will round up to the next full yard. At 24.34, you’d order 25. That’s 225 square feet of material for 199 square feet of floor, which is normal for a wall-to-wall job.
