Plywood Calculator: Sheets, Fasteners and Total Cost

This plywood calculator works out how many sheets a job needs. Enter the area, sheet size, thickness, layers, and waste. It returns sheet count, fasteners, and cost.

Plywood estimating comes down to three numbers: sheets, fasteners, and waste. Get the sheet count right and the job moves. Get it wrong and you’re short a sheet with no matching grain. This plywood calculator handles the arithmetic for wall sheathing, subfloor, roof decking, cabinets, and concrete forms.

How to Use the Plywood Calculator

  1. Pick the unit system: imperial (ft, ft², in) or metric (m, m², mm).

  2. Choose an application: sheathing, subfloor, roof, cabinet, and more.

  3. Pick the area shape: rectangle, L-shape, or direct area.

  4. Enter the dimensions. For a rectangle, type length and height.

  5. Set the number of identical areas if you have more than one.

  6. Choose a sheet size preset or enter custom dimensions.

  7. Pick panel thickness, number of layers, and waste factor.

  8. Set framing spacing, fastener type, and fasteners per sheet.

How the Plywood Calculator Formula Works

Sheet count comes from area divided by sheet area, with layers and waste applied. Fasteners come from sheet count and the pattern you choose.

Formula: Project area = Length × Width × Areas
Formula: Sheet area = Sheet length × Sheet width
Formula: Layered area = Project area × Number of layers
Formula: Area with waste = Layered area × (1 + Waste %)
Formula: Sheets needed = [ Area with waste ÷ Sheet area ]
Formula: Total fasteners = Fasteners per sheet × Sheets × Layers
Formula: Fastener boxes = [ Total fasteners ÷ Fasteners per box ]

The tool separates the net sheet count from the sheet count with waste. Net is the bare area divided by sheet area. With waste is the number you order. Waste covers cuts at edges, around openings, and mistakes. Ten percent is the default for most projects.

Fastener counts scale with sheet count and layers. A single-layer wall gets one set of fasteners per sheet. A double-layer floor gets two. The tool adjusts the default fastener count based on framing spacing and application.

Worked Example: A 20 ft × 8 ft Wall Sheathing Job

Say you’re sheathing a 20 ft by 8 ft wall. One area, one layer. Sheets are 4 ft × 8 ft, 1/2 inch thick. Framing is 16 inches on centre. Fastener type is screws, 32 per sheet, 100 per box. Waste is 10%. Sheets cost $35 each, screws $8 per box, labor $200.

  • Area: 20 × 8 = 160 ft²

  • Sheet area: 4 × 8 = 32 ft²

  • Layered area: 160 × 1 = 160 ft²

  • With 10% waste: 160 × 1.10 = 176 ft²

  • Sheets net: ⌈160 ÷ 32⌉ = 5

  • Sheets with waste: ⌈176 ÷ 32⌉ = 6

  • Total fasteners: 32 × 6 × 1 = 192

  • Fastener boxes: ⌈192 ÷ 100⌉ = 2

  • Plywood cost: 6 × $35 = $210

  • Fastener cost: 2 × $8 = $16

  • Material subtotal: $226

  • Labor: $200

  • Total: $426

  • Cost per ft²: $2.66

Six sheets cover the wall with waste. Two boxes of screws cover the fastening. The material cost is $226 before labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sheets of plywood do I need?

Divide the area by the sheet area, then add waste. A 160 ft² wall with 4 ft × 8 ft sheets needs 5 sheets net and 6 with 10% waste.

What thickness plywood for a subfloor?

Five-eighths inch is standard for subfloor. Three-quarter inch is used for heavy duty or when the joist spacing is wider than 16 inches. Check local code.

How many screws per sheet of plywood?

About 32 screws for a 4 ft × 8 ft sheet on 16-inch centres. Closer framing needs more. Roof decking uses slightly more than wall sheathing.

How much waste for plywood?

Ten percent for most projects. Fifteen percent for complex cuts. Twenty percent for cabinets and furniture where grain matching matters.

What is the difference between net and with-waste sheets?

Net is the bare area divided by sheet area. With-waste adds the waste factor before rounding. You order the with-waste number.

Does framing spacing affect sheet count?

No. Spacing affects fastener count and panel stiffness, not the number of sheets. A 24-inch spacing uses the same sheet count as 16-inch spacing.

Can I use this calculator for roof decking?

Yes. Pick roof decking from the application list. Use 5/8 inch panels and ring-shank nails or screws. Add adhesive if you’re using it.

How do I calculate fasteners for two layers?

Multiply the single-layer fastener count by two. The calculator does this automatically when you select two layers.

What is the best plywood for cabinets?

Three-quarter inch plywood is standard for cabinet boxes. Use a furniture-grade plywood with a smooth face for painted or stained finishes.

How accurate is a plywood calculator?

It’s a planning estimate. Actual sheet use depends on cut layout, panel defects, and site conditions. Order the with-waste count and keep a spare sheet.

Disclaimer

This plywood calculator estimates sheet count, fasteners, and cost from the area, sheet size, thickness, layers, waste, and prices you enter. Actual needs vary with cut layout, panel defects, framing spacing, and site conditions. Always add a small buffer for cuts and future repairs. Cost output is a planning figure and excludes taxes, delivery, and surface preparation.
