Introduction to Credit Utilization Calculator

Credit utilization is the percentage of your available credit that you are currently using. It is one of the most important factors in your credit score, accounting for roughly 30% of your FICO score calculation. Lenders look at your utilization ratio to assess how responsibly you manage credit. A lower utilization ratio signals to lenders that you are not overly reliant on credit, while a high ratio suggests potential financial stress. This Credit Utilization Calculator helps you determine your overall and per-card utilization ratios. Enter your credit card balances and limits, and the calculator shows your utilization percentage, credit score impact, and how much you need to pay down to reach recommended targets. Toolraxy built this calculator to help you understand and improve your credit health.

Formula Section

Per-card utilization ratio:

Card Utilization = (Card Balance ÷ Card Limit) × 100

Overall credit utilization ratio:

Overall Utilization = (Total Balances ÷ Total Limits) × 100

Amount to pay down to reach target utilization:

Target Balance = Total Limits × (Target Utilization ÷ 100)
Pay Down Amount = Total Balances – Target Balance

Credit score impact scale:

  • Excellent: Below 10% utilization

  • Good: 10% – 29% utilization

  • Fair: 30% – 49% utilization

  • Poor: 50% – 74% utilization

  • Very Poor: 75%+ utilization

Where:

  • Credit Utilization = Percentage of available credit in use

  • Card Balance = Current amount owed on the card

  • Credit Limit = Maximum amount you can borrow on the card

  • Target Utilization = Recommended maximum (typically 30% or lower)

Real-Life Examples Section

  • Example scenario:

    • Card A: Balance $2,000, Limit $5,000

    • Card B: Balance $1,500, Limit $3,000

    • Card C: Balance $500, Limit $2,000

    Calculations:

    • Card A utilization: ($2,000 ÷ $5,000) × 100 = 40%

    • Card B utilization: ($1,500 ÷ $3,000) × 100 = 50%

    • Card C utilization: ($500 ÷ $2,000) × 100 = 25%

    • Total balances: $2,000 + $1,500 + $500 = $4,000

    • Total limits: $5,000 + $3,000 + $2,000 = $10,000

    • Overall utilization: ($4,000 ÷ $10,000) × 100 = 40%

Pay down to reach 30% target:

    • Target balance: $10,000 × 30% = $3,000

    • Pay down amount: $4,000 – $3,000 = $1,000

Pay down to reach 10% target (excellent):

    • Target balance: $10,000 × 10% = $1,000

    • Pay down amount: $4,000 – $1,000 = $3,000

FAQs

1. What is credit utilization?
Credit utilization is the percentage of your available credit that you are currently using. It is calculated by dividing your total credit card balances by your total credit limits. It accounts for about 30% of your credit score.

2. How is credit utilization calculated?
Credit utilization is calculated by dividing your balance by your credit limit and multiplying by 100. For example, a $2,000 balance on a $5,000 limit equals 40% utilization. This calculator does the math for all your cards at once.

3. What is a good credit utilization ratio?
A good credit utilization ratio is below 30%. For the best credit scores, aim for below 10%. A ratio between 30-49% is fair, and above 50% can significantly hurt your score.

4. Does credit utilization affect my credit score?
Yes. Credit utilization is one of the most important factors in your credit score, accounting for approximately 30% of your FICO score. Lower utilization generally leads to higher credit scores.

5. What is the difference between overall and per-card utilization?
Overall utilization is your total balances divided by total limits across all cards. Per-card utilization is the ratio for each individual card. Both matter—a single maxed-out card can hurt your score even if overall utilization is low.

6. Should I close a credit card to improve utilization?
No. Closing a credit card reduces your total available credit, which increases your overall utilization ratio. It is usually better to keep old cards open with zero balances.

7. How often is credit utilization updated?
Credit card issuers typically report balances to credit bureaus once per month, usually at the end of your statement period. Your utilization ratio is recalculated each time new data is reported.

8. What is the difference between credit utilization and debt-to-income ratio?
Credit utilization measures credit card usage relative to limits. Debt-to-income ratio measures total monthly debt payments relative to monthly income. Both are used by lenders but for different purposes.
